PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Stainless Steel 1m Conductive Thread Wire for Wearable Lilypad (Pack of 5) offers an inventive method for integrating electronics into garments. This thread is capable of conducting current for both power and signals. Although it’s less conductive than PCB traces, it enables clothing to be ‘wearable’ in the electronic sense.
Crafted from stainless steel, the thread boasts exceptional resistance to tarnishing. It’s a 2-ply thread that might fit some sewing machines due to its size. The thread presents a resistance of approximately 6 Ohms per foot and a weight of around 0.15g per foot. It totals about 360 yards, made from stainless steel fiber and coiled onto a spool, providing a novel means to affix electronics to clothing designs.
This ample spool is an economical entry point into wearable electronics, offering enough material to experiment without fear of wastage. Distinguishing this thread from others we offer is its composition of stainless steel fibers, not silver plating, and the absence of a Nylon core.
As a result, soldering may be challenging due to its stainless nature, but it remains impervious to damage from a soldering iron. Its ‘hairy’ texture may pose some difficulty in tight, detailed work compared to smoother threads. Our E-Textiles specialist recommends waxing for hand sewing to mitigate issues with the ‘hairy’ texture.
For machine sewing, where waxing isn’t viable, it’s advisable to avoid sewing tight connections, as the thread’s ‘hairs’ could cause shorts in close proximity
