Shift Register Breakout – 74HC595 Board Module
This board is a breakout for the 74HC595 shift register IC in SOIC package. It allows you to clock in data and latch it, saving IO pins on your microcontroller. All the pins from the IC are accessible through standard 0.1″ headers. The Serial in and out pins are located on opposite sides of the board, and the other pins are extended, so that you can chain multiple shift register boards together.
The 74HC595 consists of an 8-bit serial input, parallel output shift register that feeds an 8-bit D-type storage register with three-state outputs. The shift register and the storage register have separate clocks. The 74HC595 also has a direct clear input (SRCLR), a serial input (SER), and a serial output for cascading. The outputs of the 74HC595 are in a high-impedance state when the output enable input (OE) is high.
Both the shift registers clock (SRCLK) and the storage register clock (RCLK) are triggered by the rising edge. If the two clocks are tied together, the shift register will always be one clock pulse ahead of the storage register.
