PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
A 4 x 4 matrix keypad is a common input device for projects. It has 16 keys that share the same input values. The 4 x 4 Matrix Keypad Module is a non-encoded keypad with 16 keys arranged in parallel. The keys are connected to the external pins by rows and columns – pins R1-R4 control the rows, while pins L1-L4 control the columns.
The keypad consists of microswitch buttons on a 4×4 matrix. The module has four 3mm (M3) holes for mounting. Each PCB has the pin designations shown on it. Four pins are used as the ‘x’ coordinate and the other four as the ‘y’ coordinate.
The module comes with pin headers already soldered (rotated 90 degrees).
How it Works:
To test whether any key is pressed, connect power to the rows, so they are at High level. Then set all the rows R1-R4 to Low and check the status of the columns. If any column is Low, it means a key is pressed and it belongs to that column. If all columns are High, it means no key is pressed. To locate the key, identify the row where the key is pressed. Set the rows to Low one by one until one of them changes the column status – the other rows will remain High.
The row that changes the column status is the one where the key is pressed. Check each column one by one to find which one is Low. The intersection of that column and row is the key that is pressed.
